- Priyanka Todi (a Hindu) hails from a rich industrial family in Kolkata, India (Lux Hosiery, some news reports estimate their net worth at Rs. 200 crores or about USD$50 million).
- At her computer graphics class, she falls in love with Rizwan-ur Rehman (her teacher who hailed from a Muslim background and lived in a not-so affluent area of Kolkata).
- Her parents are opposed to the match but the two nevertheless manage to get married on August 18, 2007 due to a Special Act allowing inter caste marriage.
- Priyanka had visited the guy's house before getting into the alliance and knew what sort of place she would have to live in (her own family house was in a posh area and much bigger).
- The couple were contacted by police who wanted Priyanka to go visit her parents.
- Priyanka did not listen to anyone and did not relent.
- However, in September, her family told her that her father had suffered a cardiac arrest and that she would have to visit.
- Once she was with her parents, they said that they wanted her to stay with them for sometime. Rehman (Priyanka's husband) was not allowed to meet her.
- A day or two after Priyanka was with her parents, Rizwan's mutilated body was found by the railway tracks (a month and 3 days after they got married).
A. She is devastated and god knows how long it would take for her to recover from this shock.
B. Their family's reputation is probably tarnished for life.
C. No guy that they would have wanted as a groom for their daughter would want to marry into a family with a reputation such as theirs. Moreover, people from India are well aware of the stigma attached with widows/divorcees [in India].
Thus, all-in-all, I feel that the parents have done a huge disservice to Priyanka and her husband's family. While the matter is most likely going to blow over soon, I believe that they should have to pay for their actions. I read a report in the newspaper that the father's (Ashok Todi's) brand Lux Cozi Hosiery is suffering big losses due to this news. People are trying to disassociate themselves from the brand because of his actions. One should have to pay for their actions and it is heartening to see that the people of India care about such ethics and are actually refraining from buying stuff produced by this brand. I sincerely hope that justice prevails in this case.
May the departed soul rest in peace!
